The Hero Package Foundation

Empowering young heroes in their battle against cancer.

Welcome to The Hero Package Foundation

Welcome to The Hero Package Family! My name is Jennifer (Fonseca) Vertentes, and I’m the founder of The Hero Package Foundation (THPF), which I started in January of 2021. I started THPF in honor of my best friend, and little hero, Emerson Lucier. I first met Emerson in November of 2018 when she was battling acute myeloid leukemia, a type of blood cancer, for the third time at three years old. At the time, I was a Rhode Island Police Officer and working in the same city Emerson was receiving treatment. What started as a visit on Thanksgiving to Emerson’s hospital room in full Police gear, soon turned into a friendship that blossomed into family. Emerson’s incredible fight against cancer, our friendship, and her eventual victory against this monster we call cancer. Inspired me to do more for little heroes like Emerson. I may have been Emersons “Hero” through treatment, however, I have found my Hero in every little warrior courageously battling cancer around the world.

After seeing Emerson ring the bell to mark the completion of treatment, I knew I had to continue helping children just like her. No child and their families should ever feel like they are in this battle alone. What began as a passion project has grown into a beautiful 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and to date, I’ve sent over 205 hero “care” packages to children battling cancer worldwide. That is 205+ families and little heroes that have become a part of the THPF family. For them I will always be here. No one in this family fights alone.

In honor of the beautiful, and courageous Emerson Lucier.

As a small foundation, I personally oversee each hero “care” package to ensure it brings as much light and love as possible to every child receiving one. After getting to know each hero, I create each package specific to the child it’s going to. No cancer journey is the same. So no care package should be created the same.

-Each hero package includes a customized gold cape. A symbol of hope, love, and the belief that every child fighting cancer is truly a hero.

-Each hero package also includes the book “The Hero With The Gold Cape” written by THPF’s founder. A true to life children’s book highlighting the bravery of each cancer warrior and their journey.

-First responder or super hero costumes or pajamas can be included in their hero package upon request. Wearing these costumes not only bring joy, however, create a special moment in bridging the gap between their heroic stories and who a “hero” is to them. It’s not the uniform you are wearing that makes you a “hero“. It’s the heart of the little one who is wearing it.

Love & Comfort:

-Whether your little hero is in-patient or out-patient, items of comfort can be added to their special hero package upon request. This includes blankets, pajamas, robes, and cozy socks.

Practical support:

Treatment and side effects can be rough on our little heroes. Ginger chews, tummy pops, cbd, snacks, lotion, and makeup can also be added to their special package upon request.

Entertainment:

Keeping busy and distracted during the different phases of treatment is not easy for our little warriors. Crafts, legos, journals, puzzles, playdoh, and kinetic sand are just some of the many things that can be included in their special and unique hero packages.

Our Heroic Impact and What We Do

At The Hero Package Foundation, I focus on offering personalized support to children battling childhood cancer. Through custom “Hero Packages,” I send love, encouragement, and hope to these young warriors, along with items that help them feel empowered, such as a gold cape, police memorabilia, and my book, The Hero with the Gold Cape.

In addition to providing these packages, I support grieving families with bereavement packages, raise funds for cancer research, and offer holiday assistance to local children in need. Every donation made to the foundation goes directly to supporting these children and their families.

Each hero package is uniquely crafted to brighten a child’s day with personalized items, including a gold cape, memorabilia, and a special book, to remind them they are never alone in their fight.

We send heartfelt bereavement packages to families who have lost a child to cancer, offering comfort and solidarity during their toughest moments.

Our Mission:

No One Fights Alone.

At The Hero Package Foundation, my mission is simple: No one fights alone. I support children under 18 battling childhood cancer by creating personalized “Hero Packages” filled with love, care, and hope. Each package includes a custom gold cape, police memorabilia, and a copy of my children’s book, The Hero with the Gold Cape, which I wrote to honor all the young heroes I’ve encountered.

In addition to sending these hero packages, I provide support for families who have lost a child to cancer through bereavement packages. I also raise funds for childhood cancer research and offer holiday support to local children in need. Every donation I receive goes directly to helping these children and families, ensuring they feel seen, supported, and loved during their fight.
